This set of drawings sprang from a revelation that came to me on one of my walks in Tennessee. Many pine trees had succumbed to the pine borer beetle which contributed to a large population of Pileated Woodpeckers, the largest of the North American woodpeckers, as well as their smaller kin. I routinely found their feathers on the trails that I walked, as well as pieces of pine bark that had fallen away from the dead trees.
One day I noticed that the pattern of black and white on the feathers was a dead match to the pattern of holes made in the bark by the birds. I was stunned by the degree of fidelity to the pattern and was certain it could not be a mere coincidence. I have since learned that this phenomenon is called entrainment, a kind of harmonic resonance manifestation.
These drawings were meant to reveal a little of that story.
