“Although I began in science, I soon returned to my first loves of art, music, and poetry. Since then, I’ve made a life of creating images in words and music.”
Art
“The brush draws the line and gives us a word to hold to…”
As a Designer, Illustrator, and Art Director Harry’s work has appeared around the world. His clients have included Dolly Parton, Austin City Limits, The United Nations, The Space Shuttle, and Spain’s 500th anniversary Columbus Fleet. His own work ranges from automatic drawings to realism and expressionism. His personal projects range from printed and handmade books and instruments to video, television and design for the web.
Music
“Of all the disciplines I’ve explored, music is the purest vent.”
As a solo musician he regularly played an arsenal of acoustic guitars at festivals and benefits, each tuned for a different style of playing. He has performed with “Legend of Bluegrass” Tom Morgan and been nominated for the Nashville Musicians Registry. His own music has been featured on television, radio, and the web, appeared on soundtracks, and he has been a featured performer on public television and the news.
As an author of over 20 CDs of music and spoken word collections Harry is a multi-instrumentalist who plays 6 and 12-string Steel string and Classical Guitars in two dozen tunings: Flat pick, Finger style, Classical, Slack Key, Hawaiian Lap steel, Bottleneck, Celtic and Baritone Guitar, and Dobro, Banjo, Ukulele, Mandolin, Bass, Keyboards, the Japanese Shakuhachi Flute, Hand Drums, Trap Set, Percussion, Harmonica, and the musical Saw.
Poetry
“I often drift into trance on revisiting the work. When done well, I believe it works on the level of dreams.”
Harry’s poetry, essays, drawings and graphic illustrations have been published in the US and abroad in journals, books, and anthologies as well as included in academic conferences on the subject of haiku, and haiga, the illustrated form.
Harry has been a featured speaker at Poetry Gatherings, and his spoken word and original music works have been featured on radio, podcasts, and websites.
In the early eighties Harry served as managing editor for Pleiades, a poetry magazine still in publication today.
“Snow on Water”, his twenty year project of words, imagery, and music, can now be viewed on the web for free, and be seen in performance spaces, Art Centers and galleries.
He and his wife Katherine Henry were fine art printmakers in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Together they have created Black Barn Arts camps and classes, Atelier Annex studios, gallery, and an online artisan collection, representation, and sales, and Arcadia Park Designs products.
Harry and Katherine are founding members of ArtUp! a community-based organization to promote and encourage art as a destination in Vermont. They have also served as Visual Arts faculty at Center for Creative Arts magnet school in Chattanooga, Tennessee, named the best in the nation in 2010. They both contributed to pioneering and building the massive studios of John Henry at 1100 E. 16th Street, where they helped build some of the largest sculptures in the world in steel and aluminum. They were also among the original visionaries of Sculpture Fields at Montague Park, a venue of public art and culture now open for viewing there.
He is currently preparing for print a series of books on relationship with the sacred landscape featuring original text, artwork, and photography. Collection includes 1250 pages with over 600 original Photographs, Paintings, and Drawings.
Harry and Katherine have been instructors and advocates for the arts in municipal, public, and private education systems.
