In Vermont there is a place where injured birds can come to be healed.
The Vermont Institute of Natural Science is a refuge for bird recovery and rehabilitation, only one of two in the United States. It is privately funded and has a very admirable success rate.
Among its residents are Eagles, Hawks, Falcons, Owls and Corvids. For some, this is merely a stop on the way to recovery and a return to the wild and its dizzying heights. But for others, it is a haven and retreat after a permanent injury, one where their presence elevates us as witnesses to their majestic grace even as they are left bound to the ground.
I bring healing herbs and stones. And I play my flute for them, the gift of wind and air and lightness.
Sweet spirits.
Touching down.
